Loan-app harassment: what to do (India)
Last updated: 2026-07-11
If a loan app, or a recovery agent working for one, is threatening you, abusing you, shaming you, or messaging your family and contacts, that harassment is illegal — and it is not your fault. Even if you did borrow, and even if a payment is genuinely overdue, no one is allowed to threaten you, abuse you, humiliate you, or contact the people in your phone to pressure you. You do not have to face this alone, and you do not have to pay under threat to make it stop. Below is what to do right now, calmly and in order.
Take one breath first. The threats are designed to panic you into acting fast — sending money, taking another loan, or staying silent out of shame. You can slow this down. What is being done to you is the wrongdoing here, not the debt.
What to do right now
- Do not pay anything under threat, and do not take a new loan to repay. Paying because you are being threatened does not make the harassment stop — it signals that pressure works, and a new "instant" loan to clear the old one is how people get pulled deeper. A genuine amount you owe can be sorted out through proper channels; it is never a reason to give in to intimidation.
- Document everything. Take screenshots of the messages, call logs, and any threats. Note the app's name, the numbers calling you, what was demanded, and anything sent to your contacts. This record is what your complaint rests on — save it somewhere safe before you block anyone.
- Block and report the numbers once you have the evidence saved. You can block callers and report abusive contacts without deleting the proof you already captured.
- Report the lender. Use the app or lender's own grievance channel to complain in writing, and report an illegal or abusive lending app to RBI Sachet (sachet.rbi.org.in), the RBI portal for unregistered or abusive lending entities.
- If there are threats, extortion, or morphed or obscene images, that is a crime — report it to the police. File at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, and go to your local police. Threatening you, demanding money by intimidation, or making or sharing morphed/obscene pictures are criminal acts — treat them as crimes, not as part of a loan.
- Tell someone you trust. The harassment works by keeping you isolated and ashamed. Telling a family member or friend breaks that isolation and means you are not carrying it alone.
You are not alone — a note on safety
If this is feeling overwhelming, or you feel unsafe, please reach out to someone you trust right now — a family member, a friend, or someone close to you. You are not alone in this, and the harassment being done to you is not your fault. If you are in immediate danger, contact the police. This situation is survivable and reportable, and there are people and official channels on your side.
Where to report — and why each place
| What is happening | Where to report |
|---|---|
| An abusive, illegal, or unregistered lending app; recovery conduct that breaks the rules | The lender's own grievance channel first, then RBI Sachet (sachet.rbi.org.in). |
| Threats, extortion, or demands for money by intimidation | cybercrime.gov.in or 1930, and your local police — this is a crime. |
| Morphed, obscene, or private images being made or shared to shame you | cybercrime.gov.in or 1930, and the police — this is a serious crime. |
| General consumer grievance support and guidance | National Consumer Helpline — 1915 (consumerhelpline.gov.in). |
Two more things worth knowing
Wondering whether the app itself was ever legal? Many harassing apps are unregulated to begin with — see how to check if a loan app is legal. And the limits on what a recovery agent may and may not do — no threats, no odd-hour calls, no contacting your contacts — are set out in the recovery-agent rules and how to complain.
Honest about what reporting does
Reporting is the right thing to do, but it is a process, not an instant switch — filing a complaint does not guarantee the calls stop the same day, and no one can promise that a particular app "will be shut down". What is true is that the harassment is illegal, that it is on record once you report, and that documenting and reporting is your strongest, safest response. Keep every acknowledgement number you are given, and keep the people you trust in the loop.
